The year was 1946. The war was over and Lewis Adams was working for a lumber company in Montgomery, AL. As the economy was gearing up for the return of so many soldiers back from the war, Lewis Adams and a partner purchased a closed veneer mill in Montgomery and created Capital Veneer Works, Inc. This new company manufactured box grade hardwood veneer used in the wire-bound box industry. In 1972 Lewis Adams became the sole owner. Two years later the new mill, which had become recognized as the most modern mill of its type in the southeast, suffered a devastating fire and was destroyed. The rebuilding of the mill would prove to be the first major contribution of the next generation of the family, Howard Adams and Tom Adams. The two brothers would from this point forward take the guiding role in the company.
Over the decades, Capital Veneer Works has manufactured hardwood veneer for the furniture industry and the flooring industry, with customers such as Armstrong and Harris-Tarkett. By the 1980’s, a chip mill was added, and American Wood Fiber began producing chips, shipped via rail car to paper companies such as International Paper, and MeadWestvaco. Over the decades, the leadership of the business has evolved as well, and in the mid 1990’s the third generation of the Adams family, Pat Adams and Jason Adams, joined the team. The new millennium saw the addition of a sawmill manufacturing crane mats for the energy construction industry, and thus Capital Mat was created. These companies have all earned a reputation of quality, service, and integrity.
Lewis Adams took the high road in all his dealings, treating people the way he would want to be treated. He taught his sons with his actions, not words. On weekends his company car was parked and only his personal vehicle was driven. Lewis Adams left a legacy of integrity, which is remembered by both his family and professional relationships alike.
